Local Area Labrador Retriever Meetups

Labrador Buddies
Question:
I regularly (daily in fact) check your website and will comment here and there BUT this question is about your lab get together that you have for lab and lab mix pups. I am just wondering if you can tell me or send to me what information you have on this. I would appreciate anything that you can share.

Answer:
Last year I created a local group called the Milwaukee Area Lab Meetup. The goal of this group was to get Lab owners and lovers together at least once a month to have a play date for the dogs while the humans socialized, traded stories and shared training secrets. It was a huge success and before long the group was so large in size that my schedule could not accommodate the group. So, I handed it off to another group member that has grown it beyond my wildest hopes and dreams.

Today the group is known as the Milwaukee Area Retriever (and large breed) Meetup. It has 202 Lab-loving members, has held 18 meetups so far and has helped raised money for a number of dog breed specific dog rescues. Although I am no longer the “Head Retriever” of the group, I am still a member and attend many of their events. It is a great opportunity to get together with other Lab and dog owners to finally have a place to boast about our dogs without someone thinking we are nuts for talking about the dogs more than most people talk about their kids. *wink*

To find out more about this specific meet-up group, please feel free to visit their group website at: http://www.meetup.com/milw-retriever/

Calling all Water Dogs!

The Milwaukee Off Leash Dog Parks Association is having their yearly Doggy Dips this weekend and we wouldn't miss it for the world! Last year was the first time our Dakota & Cheyenne went to the doggy dip and although it wasn't their first introduction to water, it was the first time they ever swam! So, the Lab Brats will be attending this year's Doggy Dip at the Sheridan Park pool in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Here is more information on the event:
  • What: Annual Milwaukee Doggy Dip
  • When: Sunday, August 19, 6pm - 8pm
  • Where: Jackson, Sheridan and Washington Park pools
  • Price: $5.00 per dog
All proceeds go to help fun Milwaukee off-leash dog parks. There is also one on September 3rd, Labor Day, Cool Waters, 6pm - 8pm. We will definitely be at the Sheridan Park Pool this weekend and will try to make the Doggy Dip at Cool Waters as well.

Hope to see you there!

Lab Brats on TV Tonight!

The Lab Brats had a blast at the Doggy Easter Egg Hunt today! The frigid cold and snow couldn't stop them and they just had to show off enough to get the attention of one of the local news station camera guys. Yep! He did a close up of our girls eating their huge edible doggy Easter eggs they found during the event - and I mean CLOSE UP! He probably even got some drool on his camera during their chowing down on the eggs! As he walked away, he said "Thank you - they will be on CBS 58 News at Ten tonight." Woo hoo! The Lab Brats will be television stars on the news tonight. So, everyone in the Milwaukee area, watch the news at 10 o'clock tonight and you should see our precious chocolate Labs!

Not to worry for those that can't watch it, we will be recording it on the DVR tonight and see about getting it posted soon. We are just so excited - it was well worth braving the freezing cold!

Happy Easter!

Milwaukee LabFest 2006

What do you get when you combine 6 families and over 10 Labrador Retrievers? One heck of a party! What a party it was! Yesterday we hosted the Milwaukee LabFest 2006 and got a group of people together from as far south as Chicago and West as Madison to join us for a fun filled day of Lab energy and fun!

At 12:00 noon, we started off in the Granville Dog Park. This is an off-leash park with a nice size river and loads of trees. All the families met there and let the dogs go wild. For over 2 hours, the Labs played ball, ran after each other, mud wrestled, and just have some great dog fun. Us humans stood on the sideline and looked like we had gone off-roading with our clothes since the Lab pups would run onto the bank, shake all the mud and water onto us, and then head back into the river for some more!

Labs Playing in River
After 2 hours, we all headed back to our house for some doggie cool-down time. The pups got loads of treats and we had ourselves one heck of a BBQ. It was great fun - talking about our world online and offline. We had truly made friends and there was no shortage of laughs. Dakota and Cheyenne didn't know what to do with themselves. Sure, they loved the park, but never expected 10 Labrador Retrievers to show up at their home shortly after. They walked around, played, ate, and ran some more. When everyone headed home, Dakota and Cheyenne weren't the only ones to crash - we humans took a much needed nap as well and dreamed about the next LabFest.
