Labrador Families

We have been a Lab family for over 2 years now and it is amazing how many other Labrador families we have met along the way. The one thing we have noticed is the amazing similarities between these families. Whether they owned just one Labrador Retriever or more, the dog owners all have the same sort of personalities. We are laid back people that love nature, are easy to strike up a conversation with, and make sure we spend quality time with our dogs. Sure, the Lab is a highly attractive dog breed and some people don't understand how much time needs to be spent with such a dog, but those of us that have welcomed them into our homes (and gotten through the rough initial stages) don't regret for one moment bringing the Labrador Retriever into our homes and hearts.

One other thing I have noticed is that Lab owners are either drawn to one specific color of Lab or make it their life's quest to have at least one of each color. As you probably have already guessed, we are partial to the Chocolate Labs, even though we still think the Yellow Labs and Black Labs are handsome as well. It is funny because there are no differences in personality or intelligence based on the color; actually it is only the color of their coats that make them different. (Anyone that tells you that chocolates are not smart are selling you a load of stuff!) Each is highly dignified and has a great personality. It makes me wonder why there are some of us that just seem drawn to a specific color. What do you think?

I think it's a matter of preference. We're a Boxer family (+ one Sherman) and my physical preference is actually brindle...although I have a fawn & a white checked.

I guess that makes me strange.

For myself and Bonnie, I think we're drawn to the fact that chocolate labs seem to be the least common - makes our girl all the more special.

I never heard that chocolate labs were stupid...just a bit more hungry. ;)

We've had all three in our family and much prefer the black labs...if for no other reason than when you leave the house in 'dress clothes' their fur doesn't show up! LOL!

Personality wise, you couldn't find a sweeter breed - no matter what color!

Fun blog! :)

Just found your blog and am enjoying it very much! We just got a chocolate lab puppy and he is so much fun! I liked the chocolate also because I don't see them around as much and just love how they look, although they are all sweet dogs.

The very first dog my family ever had was a black dachshund, chihuahua, Manchester terrier mix. When she was about 8, she gave birth to her only litter, and we kept one of those (the father contributed Scottish terrier and poodle to the mix.) She was also black. Frisker - the mom - was with us for 16 years and Dorothy - the daughter - stayed for 17. When I moved out on my own and lived in apartments where I couldn't have dogs, I got a kitty, who also was black.

Somewhere in all that, I just sort of started associating "adorable creatures with black fur" with "LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" so when my husband and I decided to adopt a puppy, it was no surprise that the first one I totally fell in love with was a little black lab mix we named Sabaka. About a year later, we added a 2nd black lab mix - Tasha - to our family. Sabaka was with us for 12 years and Tasha's still hanging in there at 14. Not long after Sabaka went to the bridge, we brought Xander - a (bet you won't see this one coming) black lab mix puppy into the fold, and he's now about 15 months and every bit as wonderful and full of "LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" as all the rest of my furkids have been.

So, yeah, I tend to stick with black, and I don't see anything weird about it at all. I think for a lot of people, when the times comes to bring a new dog into the family, we're going to be drawn to something familiar - even if it's just the colour or the breed. I think it's a bit like how a lot of women seem to be drawn to guys who are a lot like their fathers.

My husband is an animal scientist (PHd in animal behaviour & nutrition) Has worked w/1000s of labs for 25+ yrs. There have been various studies on the lab colors and traits and there are actually differences. I'll leave you guessing, no hurt feelings w/anyone!
