Neighbors and Barking
I wonder - do you ever feel bad when your dogs are in the backyard playing and barking at each other? Do you ever feel like the neighbors are probably really annoyed at the noise? I don’t mean leaving your dogs outside for hours; I mean having them out for less then 30 minutes to play...
Just now Cheyenne was barking at Dakota because Dakota decided to hog all the balls outside and not let Cheyenne have any. This is normal play for them as Dakota is just asserting her alpha role with her little sister. However, Cheyenne likes to verbalize how annoyed she is that her big sister won't share and boy does she have a mouth on her.
It is all my fault and I know it. You see, when Cheyenne was a pup, I told her to "tell her" (Dakota) when she would take all the toys and hide. In the house, it is fun. Outside the house, well, I just don't think the neighbors think it is as much fun.
Sure, if we had kids and they were playing in the snow, then they would talk and laugh out loud. But, when it is dogs, people just don't think it is as cute. Not that we have had any complaints nor that we should be embarrassed about our dogs being dogs... just that I wonder how many other Lab or other type of dog owners and lovers feel this way from time to time. For some reason, kids are tolerated but dogs are not. Anyone else find this to be true?

We had a neighbor who was trying to make our lives difficult and called to complain that our dogs were doing a number of things, one being barking. Our dogs are only outside alone for less than 20 minutes and bark when they are playing or chasing squirrels. Now I feel that I have to scoot them in the house when they let out the slightest peep.

Just dropping in to say hi! I can totally relate to that. Happy is a barky dog too. If I get annoyed with her barking at times, surely neighbours do too.

We bring our little princess into the house as soon as we hear a bark. We have never had any complaints on her barking because all the neighbors surrounding us (1 on each side and 2 behind) leave their dogs out to bark all day (and night) long. We don't want her to think this is a good thing though so if the other dogs are barking we bring her in before she can join in the chorus. If she's out for 30 minutes and lets out a few peeps we are ok with that but the constant barking the other dogs do is just annoying and we don't want her to pick up that habit. I think this helps to teach them to bark only when it's absolutely necessary.
Pepper only barks when she is in her kennel while we are at work. She really only does it when she hears us come home (I think) and we don't go straight out there to get her. We have dogs all over the neighborhood though who are out all day long and like to bark at anything. I think the people around us are used to it by now. As long as she is not out there barking after a certain time at night your neighbors have no reason to complain. If they want quiet during the day they need to move to the country.
We live in an apartment, so I feel especially bad when our lab puppy barks. Luckily everyone around us also has dogs, so we are not the only ones with a vocal pet and my neighbors assure me that they cannot hear her (I think they're lying, because I can hear their dog, but it's nice of them to lie).
I'm just glad we live in a very dog-friendly place. In our last apartment, I would not have gotten a dog because it would have annoyed the neighbors.
