Dakota's Diagnosis

Dakota Resting
Yes!! We finally have a diagnosis to Dakota's stomach ailment!!

The veterinarian called last night and read the pathology report verbatim. As he went on reading her pathology report, my head started swimming from all the large words and I felt once again like I was sitting in my mammalian physiology college course with a heavy British accented professor. (Alas, I was a marine biology major. :))

Luckily he gave me the synopsis at the end. It is not cancer but rather an "inflammation and irritation caused by a foreign body or substance". What does that mean? Well, she swallowed something she shouldn't have - plain and simple.

We still have no clue what the "foreign body" was but the doctor said he found no physical bodies in her stomach or intestines... so, if it was a material object, it passed through her system but caused damage along the way. However, it could have been a clear substance such as ice melter or such - which would not leave a trace except the damage.

So, we are stuck scratching our heads at the possible culprit and owning it up to the fact that she is a Labrador Retriever and it is all too common for this breed to ingest a "foreign body" or two. Needless to say, she will make a full recovery and we will be keeping an even more watchful eye on her from this point forward.

With only two watchful eyes, I am glad I only have two Labs! *laugh*

Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes.

Congrats on the non-cancer diagnosis!! Whewwwww! What a relief!

I'm finding that I will never have enough eyes to keep up with ONE labrador.
(All of a sudden, he has taken a fancy to the remote control like never before)

Whassup with that?

Hurrah!! So glad it's not cancer. Gracie had a similar bout last year...although without the need for surgery. Xrays showed significant irritation around the area where the stomach empties to the intestine, but no foreign bodies. I had a suspicion that the foreign body that past through was a piece of felt off a felt dog toy I had bought her. I caught her ingesting a long strand of felt. It was not too long after that she started getting sick.

Like you said, you have to watch these labs ALL THE TIME!

Looks like Dakota is taking comfort from her sister. Hope her recovery is swift and uneventful.

So glad to hear the diagnosis! I am a mom of 3 labs, and one young one who will eat anything. Two summers ago, I had to take him to the vet so they could make him throw up because he had eaten mosquito larvae killer (a bacterium). He was fine, but my nerves weren't. There is a picture of him on my blog today if you want to see the Hoov-a-dor yourself:)

Great!!! Glad there was no cancer.
It's so hard to keep an eye on dogs 100% of the time. We have a 6year old black lab and a 7 week old brindle lab pup. We will be checking the house and the yard
one more time for something they may get in to.

So happy to hear the good news. That time waiting seems to be a hundred times longer than real time.
Lots of woofs and wags to Dakota.

Thank you everyone! Dakota is our pride and joy and we are so happy to have her home.

Unfortunately, she has vomited twice in the last week - last night being the second time. We aren't worry but I will post an update on her condition later this morning with details. Prayers are still welcome - she has a long road ahead of her.
