Busy Lab Mommy
It seems obvious that I have been slacking a little in posting blog entries as of late. That is not to say that life is boring with the Lab Brats but rather that so much has been going on that I haven't had much chance to get to posting on our blog.
Between playing in all the snow, finding new and interesting games to play indoors, continued dog training, and the normal life with Labrador Retrievers, the Lab Brats have been keeping us active. The good thing though is that no matter how much we want to sleep in during these cold winter days, owning Labs helps to get us humans to keep our bodies moving.
And, of course, if we try to ignore our Labs, we suffer the consequences. What do I mean? Well, let's take Cheyenne for instance this morning. We have -16F degree wind chills outside today which make it impossible for man nor beast to go outside. So, we played a couple of games of "Find It" in our house. Needless to say, this was less than what Cheyenne needed to help expel some of that Lab puppy energy (even though she is 3 years old).
When we weren't looking, she went into the paper recycle bin that we keep open on our home office floor and grabbed the top cereal box that their daddy has just put in there this morning. With the collapsed box in her mouth, she pranced up and down our hallway - throwing her head from side to side and then plopped herself down in the living room and began to shred it. *laugh*
No matter how many times I returned it to the recycle bin, she would sneak into the office and pull it back out again. This happened 4 times before I was able to control my laughter and became stern with her to leave it.
Is she in trouble? Heck no! She is a bored Lab and this was natural for her to do. She already knew that the cardboard in the bin is nothing we would be upset at for her grabbing so she decided that if no one was going to play with her than she was going to entertain herself and that she did.
So, as you can see... our lives are never boring but quite the opposite... for we are owned by Labs and love every minute of it.

Yikes! Still a puppy after 3 years? Oh man ...
Do your labs expel energy by playing with each other? I think sometimes Chester should not be an only child (he just turned 2) and that having another dog would help entertain him. BUT then again, if the new dog had a personality like Ches's I'm a little concerned that 2 of them would take over our house. (He is constantly roaming every room he is able to looking for something to carry and slobber on). He gets walks or runs almost every day plus we play "hide and seek" with his toys for entertainment/mind challenges. Just wondered-we want to make sure before we bring another one into the house. Thanks!
M. Tornado Puppy - Yes, they are both very much puppies but Cheyenne is more-so. We call her the Energizer Labby. *laugh* Most Labs don't calm down until around 5 years of age.
Chester's Mom - Yes and no. We had originally gotten Cheyenne to keep Dakota company and to play with each other... however, Dakota much rather play with us because Cheyenne can be too much energy for her at times. For example, Cheyenne thrashes her whole body from side to side when playing tug - it feels like she can rip your arm from it's socket. We can only imagine what Dakota's teen/mouth would feel like when tugging with Cheyenne. That is why we highly recommend to every dog owner, that asks us if they should get another dog, that they should get another dog for the human family and not for the dog first. It is a lot of work with 2 dogs - as my breeder told us before we brought home our first Lab - "one Lab is like one tornado, two is like ten tornadoes". Although we could never think of getting rid of either pup, she was most definitely right on the money. :)
Thanks for your honest answer! I think I kinda knew that but was hoping that your answer was one I could show hubby who is perfectly content with one dog. I never heard the "Tornado Theory" but it isn't hard to understand 'cause I think Chester is maybe a tornado and a half all by himself!!! ;0-)
How is Cheyenne's leg doing? I hope it is getting better!
Laura - Thanks for asking about Cheyenne. She is doing much better these days but is on limited play. Of course, we won't know how well the stretched ligament has healed until we get her playing full force again but since the weather is quite bad, it seems she will be getting a little more "down time" before we can test her out. :)
Wow - that's some cold weather. It was a balmy 23 degrees here today, with 11 wind chill, and my dog insisted upon going outside. So, being a slave to the beast, we did. Still, she decided to shred some things when we returned. It's amazing how quickly a Lab can shred things like magazines, newspapers, junk mail, plastic water bottles, etc.
