Wee Pup Pains

Cheyenne resting at my feet
I just hate it when something I do causes one of my pups pain. One minute we are playing ball and the next minute my Cheyenne lets out a sharp cry that makes any dog lover's heart burst in agony. As she falls to the ground, I jump into defensive mode to protect my wee pup. She never gets hurt during play - she is a tom-boy through and through. "She just need to walk it off", I thought to myself until I notice that her back leg was in the air and she was refusing to put it down.

My body pushed itself to get to her faster then my brain has time to think. I let her know it is "ok" and begin to massage the area. Being Cheyenne, no more sounds come from her as I move parts of her leg to see where the damage was done.

Luckily for us, it seems nothing more then a very bad sprain. I immediately gave her some of Dakota's Metacam and crated both dogs for a couple of hours of rest.

The entire weekend was full of hardly any play and only the shortest of walks as she continues to favor the leg every once in a long while. There is no serious or long term damage - just something that takes rest and loads of love, of course.

Thank you - it is so difficult to keep her resting her leg when all she wants to do is play. Figures - she is a Lab. :)

I hope your pup is okay! I read on an earlier post that your one dog has HD - my 4 month old was just diagnosed with it. How old was yours and what steps have you taken to help. We are meeting with an orthopedic specialist next week to see what he needs and I would appreciate any advice or tips you have on the subject. Thank you and hopefully your pup is fully recovered soon!

Dakota was diagnosed with HD shortly before she turned 2 years old. Although her case is pretty bad on xray, the vet did not want to do surgery as he considers it a last resort. Instead, he said that as long as she is able to keep muscle mass on the leg, then there is no reason for her to have surgery.

Our RX was Metacam when she gets stiff, Cosequin DS joint supplements every day and as much exercise as she wants on softer surfaces such as grass instead of sidewalks.

Best of luck and please research surgery as many do not need surgery and sometimes end up worse. Make sure you consult with a large/giant breed specialist first (that is what our vet is).

Thanks for the info! Good to hear they do not need surgery and can still live happy healthy lives =)

Shannon, I'm Annette and you helped me a few months ago with a question about my yellow lab brothers. They are no little over a year old. I'm having a big problem. Would you consider emailing me and see if you can make any suggestions? I'd greatly appreciate it.
